Title:Asset Management Specialist/Consultant, Utilities
Report to :Senior Director, Smart Grid/Asset ManagementSummary:
This is a joint business development and project delivery position for both advisory and early phase projects within the Smart Grid and Asset Management business of Hatch. Possible home office locations for the position include Mississauga ON, Oakland CA, Portland OR, Boston MA, or Tampa FL. The selected candidate is expected to have strong utility sector relationships, ideally having worked in the utility sector, and experience either leading or providing significant contributions to the development and/or implementation of asset management programs at transmission or distribution utilities.
Hatch is expanding activities in the Smart Grid and Asset Management sector advising utilities on the impacts of integrating intermittent distributed generation and energy storage systems. The increased deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) has provided additional complexities and challenges for utilities as they transition from a monodirectional model of providing electricity to a complex, digital, data intensive, prosumer driven, decentralized model. With technological advancements (eg. smart meters, automatic feeders, smart inverters, integrated asset management and advanced data analytical models that incorporate artificial intelligence) and emerging business models (community microgrids, transactive rate-based prosumer models, etc..) that are changing the industry.
Team – The Smart Grid & Asset Management team has supported the integration of intermittent generation technologies, conducted impact assessments & location optimization of energy storage systems, developed roadmaps for the deployment of advanced asset management systems, and continues to advice utilities on how to leverage emerging technologies in their capital planning programs.
Position – The Asset Management Specialist/Consultant, Utilities (“Specialist”) will participate in delivering projects as well as business development activities. The Specialist will work within a multi-disciplinary team to lead small to medium sized projects and support larger asset management advisory and delivery engagements. The Specialist will lead and/or participate in establishing or improving partial or complete asset management programs for clients, with a specific focus on utilities.
Business Development Responsibilities may include:
Identifying target utility clients requiring asset management advisory services in the North American market
Establishing and stewarding relationships with targeted/assigned clients in the utilities sector
Working with the marketing team to establish / update marketing & client facing materials, as applicable
Attending trade conferences and industry association meetings, as applicable
Leading or participation in Bib/NoBid discussions for potential asset management opportunities
Leading or supporting the creation of proposal documents, including project & engineering estimates
With support from management, legal and the commercial team, negotiate & secure contracts
Regularly updating management on the status of potential opportunities
Staying informed on market developments within the utility asset management sector
Staying informed on Hatch’s broader capabilities to support utilities including, but not limited to, digital, advisory, water, environmental, and other power engineering offerings
Project Delivery Responsibilities may include:
Solve challenging problems pertaining to grid modernization & utility asset management optimization. This could include site & process assessments, gap analyses, development of roadmaps to improvement, leading and/or supporting the implementation of roadmaps, supporting client’s ISO 55000 Certification
Drive the planning & delivery of asset integration systems for electric utilities with increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), integrating data analytics and other optimization software platforms to improve the utilities’ customer relationship, and return on invested capital
Coordinate activities, and those of the broader project teams, to maintain project schedules & budgets to ensure successful project completion
Either leading (as PM) or supporting all delivery activities in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all of Hatch’s policies and procedures, including Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and progress and financial reporting
Support the identification and selection of potential vendor partners
Work alongside and support delivery of projects from other Hatch service offerings including those from Digital, Advisory, Technology, Energy, Infrastructure or Development
Develop, train, and mentor others to expand the team’s skills and service offerings
Significant experience in the development and/or implementation of a utility asset management program
8+ years of experience working at a utility, preferably in, or regularly with, the asset management team
Knowledge of the requirements within asset management standards ISO 55000, 55001, and 55002
Familiar with asset management program software tools; for example, Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and investment decision support tools (eg. Copperleaf, Totex, Metsco/Engin, etc.)
Familiar with the application of data analytics to asset management techniques
Experience with system optimized planning & utilization, asset evaluation & selection, development, asset GIS tagging & tracking, maintenance planning, and ultimate disposal or renewal of utility assets
Understand the challenges utilities are facing with increasing DER penetration
Reporting to the head of the Smart Grid & Asset Management team, the position requires a high level of interpersonal communication skills, as well as demonstrated project delivery experience. A valid driver’s license and passport is required. Occasional domestic and international travel to site locations is required.
