Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) Product & Regulatory Affairs Division is seeking an under-graduate level intern for the summer of 2018. The intern will work independently, in conjunction and with support from PRA staff on key projects regarding technical analysis of safety compliance processes, regulatory investigation, and certification processes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supporting the lead certification engineer in developing new, globally applied, FMVSS regulatory compliance evidence summaries. This will involve working with several Design and Evaluation departments in TMNA-R&D, providing a unique broad understanding of much of what development work goes into a compliant vehicle.

  • Via interviews with Regulation Responsible Engineers (senior Design and Evaluation staff), document best practices related to compliance and certification confirmation, then share the results (yokoten) via presentation.

  • Support documentation of PRA internal processes as part of the regional Functional Compliance Partner program.

  • Based on project timing, support lead certification engineer in developing the North American process for on-vehicle compliance checking for prototype vehicles.

  • Other projects and tasks, as needed, but including joining monthly discussions meetings with Design and Evaluation departments; participate in meetings both in North America and with via conference call with Japan; meet and learn about how TMNA-R&D’s different groups interact and work cooperatively.

Location: This position will be in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

A successful candidate will have:

A GPA of 3.0 or higher in pursuit of a Bachelor’s in mechanical or other engineering discipline. The desire to learn about the North American and international automotive safety regulations and, broadly, how they are applied. Strong technical writing skills, interpersonal abilities, quick learner, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity. Proficient with MS Office – particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
