Western State Hospital is seeking applicants for a full-time, permanent state position for a staff General Psychiatrist. No positions available for J-1 Visa.

The JC accredited Western State Hospital Division of UVA Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences is a 244 bed, state, adult psychiatric hospital in the Shenandoah Valley. Services include Admissions and Psychosocial Rehab, Special programs for Deaf and a Med/Psych unit.

Primary care services provided by NP/PA’s and supervising Primary Care Physicians. All physicians are board certified and most have faculty appointment at UVA Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences. (Eligibility/Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology preferred.)

WSH maintains collaboration with UVA, training residents/medical students and recruiting psychiatrists into public sector. Faculty provide supervision to students and residents, participate in residency training/education committees, and provide lectures to medical students on rotation, and participate in core didactic presentations in residency programs at UVA.

Attending serves as Head of Treatment Team (HOTT) to multidisciplinary team. Treatment interventions/groups provided to patients off unit in Psychosocial Rehab “treatment mall.”

Current need is for HOTT/Attending Psychiatrist on an admissions unit. Primary diagnoses include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and personality disorders. Duties include providing psychiatric care of patients admitted to the unit(diagnostic assessment, psychopharmacologic management, and indicated psychotherapies). HOTT duties include providing overall leadership to team, supervision of milieu, supervision of team in planning and implementing psychiatric, medical and behavioral treatment plans for patients.

  • Salary negotiable based on experience and board certification

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of approved medical school and residency in psychiatry. License to practice medicine in Virginia.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neorology preferred. Bi-lingual Spanish and English are a plus. Veteran preferred.
