Veterans Benefits Administration Claims Assistant in Seatac, Washington
The incumbent will work as a member of one of the teams in the Veterans Service Center, Appeals Management Office (AMO). The Claims Assistant serves as a primary contact for the Veteran and his/her representative or advocate for compensation and pension claims. The Claims Assistant explains benefit programs and entitlement criteria and will be expected to perform core duties aligned with the assigned team's mission.

TIME-IN-GRADE: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. * For a GS-5 position: There are no Time-in-Grade requirements at the GS-05 level. * For a GS-6 position: You must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5 level or higher. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Specialized Experience: In addition to Time-In-Grade, applicants must also demonstrate they have one (1) or more years of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade in the normal line of progression for this occupation. The experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically IN OR RELATED TO the work of the position to be filled.
GS-5 Grade Level:
A. Specialized Experience: Your application documents must clearly demonstrate that you possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level. Specialized experience must include all of the following: * Managing electronic and paper files and documents related to a benefits claims process. * Experience interacting with a wide variety of individuals from different backgrounds (including veterans) to request or provide detailed information. OR
B. Education Substitution: Four years above high school (submission of unofficial transcripts required).
C. Combination of Education and Experience: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year or higher education) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.
GS-6 Grade Level:
A. Specialized Experience: Your application documents must clearly demonstrate that you possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level. Specialized experience must include all of the following: * Providing advanced clerical and customer service skills * Researching and reviewing available legal and medical records/documents and piecing together pertinent information from a variety of sources as part of benefits claims processing
B. Educational Substitution:There is no education substitution at this grade level.

Physical Requirements: This position is primarily sedentary with some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of lightweight items (i.e. folders, claims files, etc.).
Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
The Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) and Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) provide eligible displaced Federal/VA competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
