Environmental Manager

Manufacturing / Production
Ottawa, Ontario

Position at Canadian Banknote Company, Limited

Do you have a passion for the environment, knowledge of sustainability practices, and experience managing an ISO 14001 certified environmental management system? If yes, we encourage you to read on to learn more about the exciting opportunity we are hiring for – Environmental Manager.

The Canadian Bank Note Company, Limited has a commitment to improving and evolving our environmental policy and our team works to ensure we have a comprehensive program that is maintained and updated. The Environmental Manager will focus on achieving the key goals and objectives of our environmental management strategy, as well as identifying opportunities for improvements – we strive to be the best in everything we do and our commitment to environment practices is no exception.

The Environmental Manager will be working in unique facilities – we are the only large manufacturing facility in the Westboro/Hintonburg area, and given the nature of our business, there are a wide variety of environmental aspects to manage. If you like to problem-solve and think outside the box, then this role will provide you with an opportunity to do so.

What you will need to be successful in this role:

  • As an experienced Environmental Manager, you will manage our environmental program objectives, and measure and track their success. We have a comprehensive environmental management strategy, but in true Canadian Bank Note style, if improvements can be made, we generally want to make them. You can put your critical thinking skills to the test and help influence and shape this strategy going forward.

  • You will be an effective planner and manager; able to keep track of all upcoming and active environmental projects including the management of corrective actions, maintenance of risk registries, monitoring of consultant and specialist activities, reviewing Capital Expenditures, and the development of lessons learned for the future.

  • You will be a keen researcher; always keeping up-to-date with the latest industry standards and using them to update our policies on waste diversion, recycling, sustainable development, and resource conservation.

  • You will work in parallel with our Environmental Compliance Manager and the specialist consultants we engage for all our legal compliance documentation and key reports, such as ECA (noise, air), NPRI, and TRA annual reports (chemical usage). You are someone who isn’t afraid of being ‘hands-on’ in running the calculations and metrics used within these reports, and your eye for detail will ensure the accuracy of reporting statistics.

  • You will maintain the ISO14001 management system and ensure we pass our yearly audits. You will work as a team with H&S and Quality to create one business management system: combining processes where applicable.

  • Our executive team will require your support and input, and you will be asked to prepare regular presentations for our executives regarding ongoing projects, areas to be addressed, and plans to solve challenges.

  • You will be a ‘go-to’ person for other business units seeking information about our environmental policy and programs. Your knowledge may be required to assist with RFPs that require environmental write-ups, as our clients are always interested to learn about how we manage and monitor our environmental performance.

  • Working within a team environment, you are someone who works with others to achieve the team’s united objectives. You will have the opportunity to work with our senior leaders in the environmental and health and safety space to further develop and hone your expertise, always keeping the goal of achieving excellence front and centre.

Our ideal candidate possesses a university degree in environmental management, earth sciences, or environmental engineering (or a related field) and 5-10 years of industry experience. Previous experience working in a production/manufacturing facility will be an asset, as will bilingualism (English/French). Eligibility for Government of Canada Secret Level clearance is a must.
