The duties of the Assistant Chief Respiratory Care Section include:

  • Responsibility in the absence of the Chief of the RRT Clinics.

  • Review, collection, and evaluation of relevant clinical data to insure appropriate care.

  • Performing basic and complex therapeutic procedures.

  • Supervise work and development of lower graded RRT.

  • Responsibility for the quality assurance activities, oversight of the PFT, Bronchoscopy, and Home Oxygen clinics.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: In a normal work-day, the employee may be required to combine standing and walking 70%-100% of a shift; lift up to 35 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally; bend frequently; squat, kneel, climb/balance, reach above shoulder level and lift from high/low positions occasionally; bend and push/pull frequents. Repetitive use of hands would be for simple grasping, pushing and pulling approximately up to 26 pounds of pressure, and fine manipulation. You must have good manual dexterity and keyboarding skills. You must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. You must be able to view and read information on computer screens.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is primarily performed in all patient care areas. Respiratory Therapists have extensive interaction with patients, staff, physicians, family members, and visitors. Normal safety precautions while working in an office/clinic or inpatient unit type environment, which is well lighted, clean and does not present hazards to personal safety. There may be occasional risk of physical harm, which requires special precautions and training. The incumbent may be exposed to infectious diseases and medical/psychiatric emergencies,

WORK SCHEDULE: Full-Time, Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

**BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. Citizenship**

  • Certificate as an Registered Respiratory Therapist from the**NBRC (National Board for Respiratory Care) and a registry number, or a certificate from another body which the NBRC recognizes as its credentialing equivalent.

  • Proficient in spoken and written English**as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

**GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

GS-9:**In addition to meeting requirements for GS-8, applicants must have at least 1 year successful and progressively responsible experience related to respiratory therapy at the GS-8 level or equivalent. This experience must have included demonstrated accomplishments in upgrading services to patients; demonstrated expert knowledge of respiratory therapy methods, equipment, and procedures and the ability to assume responsibility to plan, organize, direct, coordinate, and evaluate programs involving respiratory care; Demonstrated knowledge and ability needed to perform complex respiratory procedures with minimal supervision. Is able to participate with physicians and nurses and other staff in planning respiratory treatment, with great reliance on the individual's knowledge of the equipment; and Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide emergency or critical respiratory care; service as a shift leader or supervisor or sole responsible respiratory therapist on a shift; and to plan and conduct training sessions with respiratory therapy students, hospital staff, patients, and family members.
