Acts as a staff specialist in providing technical guidance, complex or unique assignments. Ensures compliance with environmental regulations, quality standards, and client requirements. The ES must be fully competent in conventional aspects and have diversified knowledge of environmental service principals and practices. ES must be capable of planning and conducting tasks requiring independent judgment in the evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation or modification of standard environmental techniques, procedures, and criteria.
Responsible for technical direction over a group of environmental specialist, geologist, and biologist.
Normally requires a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, geology, biology or equivalent
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Requires a minimum of 10 years total experience in environmental consulting, and is usually referred to as a lead position. The ES must be cognizant of the different environmental regulations used for project completion under the National Environmental Policy Act as well as other media specific (water, waste, and air) regulations and be effective in their interpretation.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participates in the development of the environmental project’s scope, budget, schedule based on specific environmental concepts and criteria.
Analyze complex environmental issues requiring the development of new or improved techniques or procedures.
Consult with regulatory agencies concerning mitigation measures.
Monitors project progress for technical accuracy and adherence to schedule and budget.
Represents respective projects at meetings and conferences.
May plan, organize, and supervise environmental activities for small to moderate projects.
Provides environmental service activities for preliminary project estimates.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations, analysis, and estimating techniques.
Occasionally, will conduct or participate in field trips to operating facility, construction sites, or project sites. This requires the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb, and balance. Lifting of 25 pounds may be required. It also requires clear close and distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
Normal work environment will be a business office with moderate noise. Occasionally, will conduct or participate in field trips to project sites. This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, work near moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and airborne particles.
