Basic Requirements: A. Degree: professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR B. Combination of education and experience--college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. [NOTE: The adequacy of this background must be demonstrated by additional achievements such as professional registration or successful completion of the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination. Specialized Experience GS-11: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-09 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: developing, controlling and managing project milestones and budgets from planning through construction and initial operation; providing status reports on projects assigned (progress, issues and trends); reviewing, evaluating and analyzing functional requirements with organizational representatives to clarify and resolve questions and concerns OR, Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree . Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level if you have some specialized experience as described above but less than one year, and you have less than 3 years of graduate education as described above. Compute the percentage of these requirements that you meet; the total must be at least 100%. When combining education with experience, first determine your total qualifying education as a percentage of 3 years of required education; then determine your experience as a percentage of the 1 year of experience required; finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.

GS-12: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-11) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. There is no educational substitution for the GS-12 level.
