full-time position with Orthopedic Surgery; 37.5 hours per week; Monday – Friday
Assist in delivery of patient centered medical care in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery under the supervision of the attending physician with possibility of expanded community outreach through functioning as an athletic trainer in schools and sports events. (The majority of time will be spent in the orthopedic clinic environment.) Educate patients concerning injury prevention, rehabilitation and performance improvement.
Essential Job Functions:
Provide medical history, physical evaluation and patient assessment.
Exercise program development including isometric, isotonic, plyometric, open and closed chain exercises.
Dietary program development to improve health, increase stamina, and/or alter weight.
Educate patients on importance of fluid hydration, concussion recognition and infectious disease control.
Instruct and document patient education relating to appropriate use of crutches, canes, walkers and wheelchairs, proper cast care, splints or other orthopedic devices.
Provide sports team coverage. Work with athletes and coaches. Communicate with parents/guardians.
Assist in expediting patient flow.
Screen patients for appropriate clinical information and document appropriately.
Prepare equipment, injections, educational materials, etc. during treatment and examination of patients.
Perform patient care including cast application/removal, splinting, post-op wound care, fitting patients for braces and suture/staples removal.
Accompany clinician into patient exam areas for purpose of transcribing the history and physical exam. Accurately document clinician’s encounter with the patient.
List all diagnoses and symptoms, as well as, follow-up instructions and prescriptions as mentioned by the clinician.
Transcribe orders, including diagnostic testing and medications.
Document all procedures performed by the clinician.
Develop athletic injury protection programs as appropriate to patient population.
Coordinate patient care with essential support services such as rehabilitation, radiology, etc.
Perform other duties as required.
Bachelor Degree in Athletic Training or related field. Successful completion of BOC certification examination. Licensed in Maryland. CPR/First Aid/AED Certification. Two years of related experience.
Knowledgeable of basic rehabilitation principles. Able to perform sports team coverage. Knowledgeable or willing to learn EPIC. Is patient-centered. Able to multi-task. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Understands orthopedic terminology and conditions. Recognition of physical exam process and ability to record details. Organizational skills with focus on tracking and improving patient flow. Knowledge of musculoskeletal system and related conditions. Ability to work in a team environment with a variety of health care professionals and promote a positive work environment. Able to use tact and persuasion as appropriate requiring good oral and written communication skills.
Master’s Degree in related field.
