Position Description

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is actively seeking an Intelligent Systems Software Engineer. APL is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC.


The Intelligent Systems Group is a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers leveraging the fields of computer science, applied neuroscience, and robotics to invent the future of intelligent systems. The Intelligent Systems Group is seeking a Software Engineer to support research and rapid prototyping for intelligent systems.

Job Summary:

The Intelligent Systems Group, within the Research and Exploratory Development Department, is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Software Engineer who is interested in supporting the creation of the next generation of intelligent systems. Working within a high energy, innovative, and collaborative team, the candidate will assist in defining and creating prototypes to address research questions and critical challenges in the area of intelligent systems, including the areas of autonomy, robotic manipulation, perception, machine learning, and brain-computer interfaces. The candidate will have a broad technical expertise, with knowledge of multiple software technologies and the ability to perform hands-on development in multiple environments and support demonstrations of novel technologies.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

  1. Rapid software prototype development, including software design, implementation, integration, testing, documentation, and demonstration. (85%)

  2. Contribution to technical papers, conference presentations, and sponsor interactions. (15%)

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Computer Science/Engineering, or related field.

  • Four years of Software Engineering experience.

  • Broad software engineering knowledge and experience, including development experience with multiple software languages and operating systems.

  • Experience working in software teams and established code bases.

  • Experience with any of the following programming languages: Java, C/C++, C#

  • Experience with any of the following operating systems: Windows, Unix, Linux

  • Experience with any of the following web applications: Java Script, Angular, HTML, CSS

  • Experience with any of the following software tracking tools: Git, JIRA

Desired Qualifications:

  • M.S. or higher in Computer Science/Engineering, or related field.

  • Practical experience working on complex software or system engineering challenges in a team environment.

  • Experience with software lifecycle management tools, database technologies, Docker, and Unity3D.

  • Familiarity with natural language processing, machine learning, deep learning, object recognition, semantics, modeling and simulation, AR/VR development, speech-to-text technology, and cloud computing concepts.

  • Subject matter expertise in machine learning, autonomy, applied neuroscience, robotic systems, or a related discipline.

Special Working Conditions:



Eligibility to obtain a Secret level clearance. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
