This position is located under the Office of Field Operations-Charlotte Field Division, located in Columbia, SC.

The incumbent serves as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of a Field Division over several subordinate field offices and/or groups. The position also functions as a key management official within the field division, responsible for assisting and advising the Division Director/Special Agent in Charge in the overall management and coordination of the enforcement programs and operations of the division. Through several subordinate Resident Agents in Charge and/or Group Supervisors, manages and directs a large staff of criminal investigators and clerical support, overseeing their work for effectiveness in conducting division law enforcement operations and activities. Performs a full range of supervisory functions including: making decisions on work problems presented by subordinate RAC's/Group Supervisors; collaborating with division managers and supervisors to negotiate, decide on and/or coordinate work-related changes affecting their organizations; advising the SAC and other Bureau management officials on problems impacting ATF's overall enforcement mission; etc.

Applicants must have had one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for the position is defined as comprehensive knowledge of all ATF law enforcement investigative techniques, technical and scientific advancement in the field, in order to direct a major field component of the Bureau, to ensure the effective execution and coordination of criminal enforcement programs, and to make operations decisions regarding investigations of a criminal nature.

  3. Skill in oral and written communications in order to review, prepare and defend investigation reports, make presentations to management and professional groups.

PROMOTION TO MID-LEVEL (GS-15) LEADERSHIP. Several positions qualify for this category, such as ASAC, Division Chief, Deputy Division Chief, Chief of Staff, Headquarters SAC, and external representatives. GS-1811-14 special agents are eligible to apply after meeting the below requirements by the closing date of a vacancy announcement:

1) Completion of 52 weeks of continuous HQ service, which includes competitive temporary promotions of this duration or longer. (Prior HQ time is not required for non-ASAC positions).

2) Minimum 8 years as a Special Agent in ATF.

3) Completion of 2 years as a field supervisor of which 1 must be as a GS-1811-14 field enforcement supervisor (RAC/GS to include FIG GS).

NOTE: As of the effective date of this order, GS-1811-15 supervisors that have not met the field supervision criteria who desire reassignment to a GS-1811-15 ASAC position must step down to the field GS-1811-14 position to fulfill eligibility requirements.
