Responsibilities

This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Charlotte Health Care Center, Charlotte, NC, within the Cardiology Department, Medicine Service.The ACSM Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist provides exercise screening, exercise and fitness testing, exercise prescriptions, exercise counseling and supervision, and health education/promotion. The Exercise Physiologist works individually or as part of an interdisciplinary team in a clinical, community, or public health setting. The Physiologist will work with Veterans with disabilities, injuries or diseases by using a wide range of physical fitness techniques and procedures. The Exercise Physiologist provides supervision and preliminary interpretation of diagnostic cardiac exercise stress testing in conjunction with Staff Cardiologists.

  • The incumbent develops, designs, and conducts an exercise program tailored to individual patients considering age, health conditions, and physical functioning.
  • Provides treatments for patients with cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, orthopedic, musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, neoplastic, immunologic, or hematologic disease.
  • Develops tailored physical fitness plans of care by structuring and modifying standard and nonstandard treatment programs, developing goals and uses a multifaceted approach determined by the Veteran's physical and mental conditions.
  • Secures the confidence and cooperation of Veterans by explaining the purpose of physical fitness services including evaluation techniques, interventions and adjustments made to the plan of care.
  • Provides the Veteran with health education, as well as, promotes disease prevention and answers physical fitness questions.
  • Instructs and motivates Veterans and communicates with medical staff and the Veteran's families to ensure compliance with the therapeutic goals and desired outcomes.
  • Modifies intervention environments, tools, and activities according to the Veteran's treatment responses.
  • Records responses to treatment in the patient's medical record.
  • Prepares and maintains the equipment and supplies for required treatments and performs safety checks.
  • Performs complex analytical studies to coordinate the evaluation of medical/scientific programs and policies and recommends improvements.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/31/2018.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-11 position, you must have served 52 weeks at the (GS-9). The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

Specialized Experience: You must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-9) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Developing tailored physical fitness plans of care; performing research duties and testing; administering scores and interpreting results of various physical fitness tests; monitoring and interpreting physical stress tests; scheduling and screening; measuring and evaluating exercise and physical activity related measures; fitness testing and providing exercise prescriptions; instructing and educating patients about fitness techniques and procedures; maintaining, inspecting and cleaning laboratory exercise equipment; educating colleagues/peers/patients on exercise related topics; and responding to emergency situations, including basic life support.

OR

Education: Must have a Master's or equivalent graduate degree in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology. (Transcripts Required) Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Only graduate level education in excess of one year (18 semester hours) is creditable towards meeting this requirement.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
