CIRES/SWPC Professional Research Assistant
The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) is seeking a full-time Professional Research Assistant to work with the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), located in Boulder, Colorado.
Our mission at SWPC is to deliver a real operational coupled Whole Atmosphere Model - Ionosphere-Plasmasphere-Electrodynamics (WAM-IPE) model and products in the near future, as highly expected from NCEP. This job encompasses the development, maintenance, and management of the Whole Atmosphere Model system code on the NOAA/NCEP supercomputers. The job location will be with the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, Boulder, Colorado, United States. The job may require travel to Washington D.C. several times a year. The appointment is expected to begin as soon as possible after 1st October 2016.
Under the supervision of the WAM project manager and project scientist, develop and maintain the WAM on the computers of the NOAA Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP).
Maintain and develop the WAM code and keep it available for runs-on-demand.
Run model on demand for test, evaluation, and validation.
Maintain version control of the code
Develop and run scientific visualization package
Develop and run post-processing analyses for evaluation of model output.
Assist in development of the real-time WAM and WAM Data Assimilation Systems.
Participate in model validation activities
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of weather and/or space weather models
Programming and Code Development:
Experience working with a variety of operating systems and environments including Windows and Linux.
Experience in development of parallel codes in FORTRAN is required. Proficient in variety of computer languages such as C, Python, Perl, IDL, etc… is desired.
Experience with using complex numerical models, debugging, performance analysis, benchmarking, and tuning.
Experience in working on parallel computers with Linux operating systems.
Familiarity and knowledge of scalable parallel techniques and programming, such as MPI, OpenMP, and/or GPU.
Ability to clearly document and maintain version control of codes
Understanding of validation and verification techniques for model performance assessment.
Ability to establish good working relationships with the programmers and scientists who develop the models
A B.Sc. degree in physics, space physics, atmospheric sciences, or a related field
Experience working with and developing weather or space weather models on super computers and in a parallel computing environment.
