ACLD Psychiatrist - Full-Time in Bethpage, New York

Primary Purpose of Job

Provide evaluation, treatment and follow-up services to developmentally disabled patients.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Substantial reasoning skills required including the ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete issues simultaneously; the ability to identify problem, interpret data and draw conclusion; and the ability to apply principles in logic or theoretical thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to coach and counsel, interpret and advise, and the ability to develop and present to professional forums.

Essential Functions

Operational/Clinical

  • Perform initial evaluations, treatment planning and follow up for patients referred for psychiatric services.

  • Prescribes and monitors medications.

  • Insures that patients receive appropriate follow-up care and instructions

  • Consults with family, professional, and service providers and consumer as appropriate explaining all psychopharmacological and/or behavioral interventions as prescribed.

  • Work with direct care staff in a cooperative, informative and non-confrontational manner.

  • Demonstrates willingness to be flexible in meeting the needs of the individual and the caretakers.

  • Be on-call after hours to provide needed services.

  • Reviews ancillary mental health services (e.g. psychotherapy, psychology) for appropriateness, utilization review and recertification.

Documentation

  • Document clinical records in a professional, legible and complete manner.

  • Insure that all documents are signed, stamped and dated.

  • Exhibit knowledge of principles of documentation needed for appropriate billing.

Quality/Teamwork

  • Participate in peer review activities of the Quality Management program.

  • Ensure coordination and synthesis of services among psychology, psychiatry, neurology and other specialty services.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary clinical team meetings and staff meetings.

  • Assume responsibility to help resolve conflicts and disagreements.

Requirements

  • A physician licensed by and currently registered with the New York State Education Department in area of specialty

  • Qualified by training, experience to treat persons with developmental disabilities
