DESCRIPTION: This is a senior level position in the Office of Tourism. Responsibilities include budget and program management, drafting and monitoring contracts and giving direction to and managing Advertising, Market Research and Fulfillment programs for the State. Position reports directly to the Director of Tourism.


  • Oversee day-to-day workflow with the Office of Tourism full-service marketing agency, reviewing and approving marketing materials produced by the agency.

  • Manage the marketing research contract to assure marketing research projects are completed in a timely manner.

  • Administer the fulfillment contract which includes securing and managing the inventory of printed materials for distribution to individuals and groups requesting information and coordinating with visitor information centers to answer telephone and email inquiries of people seeking Maine travel information.

  • Draft Requests for Proposals (RFPs), for advertising, research and fulfillment programs, establish RFP review committees and lead contractor selection process.

  • Manage budgets for areas of responsibility.

  • Analyzes data and trends and make recommendations to the Director of Tourism for marketing projects to advance tourism marketing efforts.

  • Attendance at travel trade and consumer travel shows.

  • Speak to various local, regional and statewide groups to present the State’s plans, programs and positions on issues.

  • Provides direction and assistance to Maine tourism industry stakeholders.

  • Undertake other activities that the Director of Tourism considers appropriate and necessary to ensure implementation of the Office’s tourism marketing program.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED (to successfully perform the work assigned).

  • Knowledge of the principles of economic analysis, management and development issues.

  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely in oral and written form.

  • Ability to lead public presentations to various audiences.

  • Ability to perform basic accounting work.

  • Ability to concept, develop and budget for marketing projects.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to interpret state laws, rules and regulations relating to tourism activities.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.


A nine (9) year combination of experience, education and training of a progressively responsible nature in the advertising, public relations, hotel, airline, cruise line or destination marketing fields. Preference will be given to candidates with at least three years at a management or executive level. Familiarity with Maine’s tourism industry and product highly desirable. A degree in marketing or hospitality management or a minimum of six years in progressively responsible positions with an advertising or Public Relations agency or destination marketing organization.
