Responsibilities

As the senior IT Specialist in the Desktop Services Branch, you will:

  • Serve as a technical authority and senior expert advisor performing hardware engineering assignments, including hardware evaluation, testing, documentation, quality assurance and configuration management.
  • Direct or independently prepare technical specifications, statements of work, task orders, and other acquisition related documentation necessary to effectively obtain and administer Information Technology projects.
  • Advise managers and customers on systems, software and/or hardware needs, on new technology, and recommends modifications to current software and/or hardware.
  • Coordinate teams responsible for the implementation of new technology.
  • Provides extensive independent research, to evaluate new products and systems hardware for integration to the operational environment; and tests, analyzes, evaluates, validates and implements new technologies as applicable to the USPTO.
  • Provides technical advice and leadership in the analysis, design, development, deployment, maintenance, and enhancement of assigned large scale advanced Information Technology systems.

Qualifications

You must meet the following United States Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) qualification requirements for the advertised position. OPM's prescribed Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Information Technology Management Series can be found here. You must meet all qualification requirements including time-in-grade (refer to 5 CFR 300.604 for more information on time-in-grade) by the closing date of the job announcement.

Specialized Experience:is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the federal service.

Candidates for the GS-14 grade level must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Experience performing Information Technology (IT) hardware research, evaluation and testing in a multi-platform, multi-vendor environment;

  • Experience working with physical hardware technologies;

  • Experience advising management and customers on new technology, and hardware modifications and enhancements.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

In addition to meeting specialized experience requirements, you must have IT-related experience demonstrating these competencies:
