Position Summary/Description:

The primary purpose of this position is to function effectively as a member of a team of professionals to provide veterinary care to research animals.

Responsibilities will include inspecting research animals housed by UNC, monitoring health status of research animals, and evaluating and clinically managing sick or injured animals. The veterinary technician will participate in collecting biological samples on a variety of species and provide routine care such as, vaccinations and parasite control. The veterinary technician will be required to keep detailed and accurate records of health evaluations and surgical procedures. The veterinary technician will participate in the training of investigators and students in anesthetic procedures and other procedures, as necessary.

Emergency duties required during adverse weather and/or other emergency situations. Weekend, on call, and holiday work required occasionally on a rotating basis.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills:

•Requires demonstrated experience preparing companion/USDA-covered animals for surgery and monitoring anesthesia, and providing anesthesia support for companion/USDA-covered animals. •Demonstrated experience in animal health evaluation required. •Basic data entry skills required. •Laboratory rodent (mouse, rat) handling experience required.
•The selected candidate must have the demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with research personnel and/or veterinary animal practice clients and demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills. •Requires the demonstrated ability to work independently, with minimal supervision. •Excellent attention to detail and a strong work ethic are required. •The selected candidate must be capable of restraining a variety of animal species, including occasionally lifting animals weighing up to 50 lbs. •AALAS certification at that LAT level is required. •This position requires a valid driver’s license.

Preferred :

A veterinary technician degree is strongly preferred. Graduates of an accredited AVMA program in veterinary medical technology preferred. Higher levels of AALAS certification preferred. Basic surgery skills preferred, with rodent surgical skills a plus.
