One of ten districts across Louisiana, MHSD was created by the state legislature in 2003 to oversee the delivery of publicly-funded, community-based mental health, addictive disorders and developmental disabilities services to our area. MHSD serves adults, children and families of Orleans, Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes. In particular, we serve residents who are uninsured or Medicaid eligible, though developmental disabilities services do not have income restrictions.

One year of experience in teaching, clerical work, claims examining, social services, vocational rehabilitation counseling or instruction, occupational therapy, counseling, nursing, engineering, skilled trades work, or developmentally disabled services.


College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.

Training in teaching, clerical work, claims examining, social services, vocational rehabilitation counseling or instruction, occupational therapy, counseling, nursing, engineering, skilled trades work, or developmentally disabled services will substitute for the required experience on a month for month basis.


Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; the Higher Learning Commission; the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
