AbbVie Senior Medical Writer, Oncology in Lake County, Illinois

AbbVie has exciting opportunities for Senior Medical Writers within the Global Medical Publishing department, located in North Chicago, IL, at AbbVie’s Global headquarters. The Senior Medical Writer position has multiple responsibilities that support the development of scientific publications for submission, publication, and/or presentation in peer-reviewed journals and at medical or scientific meetings.

Key Responsibilities Include: * In accordance with authors’ direction, provides medical writing and editing expertise for abstracts, posters, oral presentations, and manuscripts. * Communicates with and works effectively and productively with all authors on the development of scientific publications. * Understands and interprets data generated from a variety of sources, including internal and external studies, research documentation, charts, graphs, tables, and published literature. * Creates figures and tables for publications that effectively communicate the data and adhere to journal/congress requirements. * Coordinates the review, approval, submission, and production of publications. * Ensures publications are developed in accordance with the established timelines. * Responsible for compliance with applicable corporate policies and procedures. * Effectively manages all assigned publication projects, including outsourced projects to vendors. * Utilizes Datavision publication management system, and ensures accuracy of publication records and resourcing tools for assigned publication projects. * Learns and maintains therapeutic area and product knowledge and applies to projects. * Maintains current awareness of good publication practices and editorial policies and applies to publishing projects. * Works effectively with cross-functional stakeholders. * Addresses document content issues and questions that arise. * Independently identifies conflicts affecting assigned publications and resolves or elevates to ensure resolution.

Basic: * Bachelor’s Degree in Science with relevant writing experience, or Bachelor’s Degree in English or Communications with significant relevant scientific experience. PhD, PharmD, or Master’s Degree highly preferred. * American Medical Writing Association (AMWA) certification or other medical writing certification is preferred. * 3 years relevant experience in medical writing in the healthcare industry (including medical communication agencies) or academia required or in a related area such as clinical/scientific research, or product support/R&D * 3 years’ experience in experimental design and clinical/preclinical data interpretation preferred. * Excellent written and oral communication skills. * Ability to assimilate and interpret scientific content and translate information for appropriate audience. * Working knowledge of statistical concepts and techniques.
