The vacancy is located in the Security Department of Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System, Jackson, LA. ELMHS is the largest 24-hour, multi-site, state psychiatric complex, comprised of residential, outpatient and inpatient services.

The Corrections Major - Therapeutic has a Special Entrance Rate of $1471.20/biweekly or $18.39/hourly.

This position may be filled as either a Probational or Job Appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agencywide permanent status employees); by Detail to Special Duty, or as a WAE. Current permanent status, classified employees may be required to accept a Probational appointed if selected for a full-time position.

Four years of experience in a forensic, mental, correctional or penal institution with responsibility for one of the following: security, custody, clinical care or rehabilitation of offenders.


Must have attained eighteenth birthday at time of application.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.


A forensic institution is defined as a 24-hour secure facility providing treatment to judicially remanded clients.

To assist in ensuring that the integrity of security is intact, that the application of clinical treatment by security staff is appropriate, and that security staff are managed in accordance with facility policy.

24 hour secure facilities housing judicially remanded clients.


Differs from the Corrections Captain--Therapeutic by responsibility for second-line supervision over multiple teams and units.

Differs from the Corrections Chief--Therapeutic by lack of managerial responsibilities over the total security/therapeutic program.

Examples of Work

Supervises and directs subordinate staff in the provision of a secure environment and appropriate therapeutic aspects of client care.

Makes on-site visits and inspections.

Reviews team reports submitted to the security office.

Consults and counsels with subordinate staff and supervisors.

Performs consultative sessions with other disciplines.

Reviews client care monitoring results done in accordance with the quality assurance plan of the security department.

Assists in development of policies and procedures as related to security and client care by complying with consultation request from supervisory staff members of other disciplines, or from administration and serving on committees as appointed.

Assists with special projects as requested by supervisor or administration.

Completes performance planning evaluations and identifies educational programs which will enhance subordinates' job abilities.

Provides on-the-job training or assigns individuals to appropriate educational programs.

Documents employee problems and confers with Corrections Chief--Therapeutic regarding appropriate action to be taken.

May serve as an assistant to the Corrections Chief--Therapeutic and assume the duties of that position in his/her absence.

Performs related duties as assigned.
