General Description

Responsible, under direct supervision, for performing administrative support for customs compliance groups. This includes coordination of import/export operation files. This role will interact with brokers to ensure that SEA products clear customs and are delivered in a timely manner to meet the customer's delivery schedule. Individual contributor representing the most common entry point for this career level. Learns to use theoretical professional concepts and applies company established practices and processes to deliver work under general supervision.

Ensure the company's global importations and exportations are conducted in accordance with the rules and regulatory requirements of Customs and other applicable governmental agencies in the affected country. Consults with product managers to review new products and make recommendations on material content to insure overall customs compliance. Assist in the preparation of commercial invoices and all other specific documentation requirements called for in an import/export environment. Create computerized indexes of shipment information. Responsible for generating data queries and validating results for accuracy. Manually creates shipping notifications within SAP from outside vendors which allows an interface within STLS. Review, research, and evaluate Customs rulings and regulations for product classification insuring correct rates of duty (if any) are applied. Update shipping status daily to include changing shipping schedules, delivery dates, and overall shipping qualities. Coordinate invoices received from Customs Broker and Freight Forwarders with Program Administrators and Accounts Payable to ensure prompt payment for all inbound and outbound shipments. Provides assistance to internal business groups relating to import or export issues that may arise.

Necessary Skills / Attributes

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 1-5 years of directly related experience or Bachelor's Degree with 0-1 year of experience is required.

  • Additional formal business or compliance training preferred.

  • Prior experience with import/export transactions, interacting with customs broker, and freight forwarding required. Prefer prior experience leading projects and demonstrating effective communication and organizational skills.

  • Ability to define objectives, identify tasks and work assignments, provide direction, and make decisions based upon applied knowledge and experience.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple and simultaneous tasks, issues, and activities.

  • Able to interpret and understand U.S. Customs Harmonize Tariff, Rules and Regulations, and other government agency guidelines.

Work is generally performed in an office environment. Operate a computer keyboard and view a video display terminal between 50% - 95% of work time, including prolonged periods of time. Requires considerable (90%+) work utilizing high visual acuity/detail, numeric/character distinction, and moderate hand/finger dexterity. The movement and transportation of equipment, most of the time is under 25 pounds. Performs work under time schedules and stress which are normally periodic or cyclical, including time sensitive deadlines, intellectual challenge, some language barriers, and project management deadlines. Machines, tools, equipment, and work aids include printers, copiers, faxes, and other equipment commonly associated with an office work area. May require working additional hours beyond normal schedule. Travel varies depending on position. Consistently demonstrates a commitment to policies and procedures, including but not limited to, attendance, confidentiality, conflict of interest, and ethical responsibilities.

The ability to prioritize multiple and simultaneous projects, issues, and activities. The ability to read, prepare, interpret, and understand international product shipment and customs information from various order, shipping, and receiving documents to ensure accuracy and thorough preparation of transportation and receiving documents. Ability to communicate in writing, or orally, product logistics matters to others. Ability to independently follow and execute work assignments to provide effective product receiving and logistics data entry services to achieve business objectives, product delivery, and organizational goals within established time frames and specifications. The ability to follow procedures and make decisions determined from available choices and from well-established guidelines. The ability to analyze situations and use innovation to resolve problems, as necessary.
